10 Fashion Tips for Women Over 50 That Actually Work
Can we talk about fashion for a minute?
Because somewhere along the way, the fashion world decided that style had an expiration date. That after a certain age we should fade into the background, stick to neutrals, and stop having fun with clothes.
I completely disagree. And I think you do too.
At 57, I feel more stylish, more confident, and more like myself than I ever did in my 30s. And I want that for every woman reading this.
So here are my 10 most honest fashion tips for women over 50 — the ones I actually follow myself.
1. Fit is everything.
Nothing ages us faster than clothes that don't fit properly. Too big reads as frumpy. Too tight reads as uncomfortable. Find a good tailor — seriously, it's one of the best investments you can make. A $30 blouse that fits perfectly looks more expensive than a $200 one that doesn't.
2. Invest in a few really good basics.
A well-fitted pair of dark jeans. A crisp white button down. A classic blazer. A little black dress. These pieces never go out of style and they make everything else in your closet work harder.
3. Don't be afraid of color.
The "women over 50 should wear muted tones" rule is completely made up. If you love cobalt blue, wear cobalt blue. If coral lights up your face, wear coral. Color is joy — don't let anyone take that from you.
4. Find your signature style and own it.
Maybe you're classic and elegant. Maybe you're bohemian and layered. Maybe you love casual chic or bold and edgy. Whatever it is — lean into it fully. The most stylish women I know aren't following trends, they're following themselves.
5. Pay attention to necklines.
A good neckline can be incredibly flattering. V-necks and scoop necks tend to elongate the neck and flatter most body types. If turtlenecks aren't your thing, don't force it. Find what frames your face beautifully and repeat it.
6. Embrace comfortable shoes that are also cute.
Gone are the days of suffering for fashion. The good news? So many brands now make shoes that are genuinely beautiful AND comfortable. Your feet will thank you and you'll actually wear them.
7. Wear what makes you feel amazing.
This sounds simple but it's the most important tip on this list. Get dressed every single morning in something that makes you feel good. Not just presentable — good. It changes your whole day.
8. Update your denim.
If you're still wearing jeans from five years ago, it might be time for a refresh. Straight leg and wide leg jeans are incredibly flattering on most body types and they're having a major moment right now. Try a few styles — you might be surprised what you love.
9. Accessories are your best friend.
A great bag, a beautiful scarf, simple gold jewelry, a classic watch — accessories can completely transform a basic outfit. And unlike clothing, they rarely go out of style and usually fit no matter what size you are.
10. Shop for yourself, not for anyone else.
Not for your age. Not for your size. Not for what you think you're supposed to wear. Shop for the woman you are right now — vibrant, experienced, confident, and absolutely worth dressing beautifully.
Style is not about age. It's about knowing yourself, honoring your body, and expressing who you are every single day.
And at this chapter of life? We know ourselves better than ever.
Go get dressed like it. 💛
